An AI company just set up a fund that could hit $100 billion, bigger than the Gates Foundation, and the example it gave for how to spend the money is workers whose jobs get hit by AI. Oh, and the better its AI gets at doing those jobs, the bigger the fund gets. That's Anthropic, the company behind Claude, and the way they set this up is clever. Just look at the numbers. Anthropic is putting 5% of its stock into the fund. At the $965 billion valuation from its May funding round, that's about $48 billion. Bankers have reportedly been telling investors the IPO could come in around $2 trillion, and at that price 5% is $100 billion. The Gates Foundation has spent 25 years building its endowment, with plenty of Warren Buffett's money in it, and it's still under $90 billion. Then there's the…

We’re committing a portion of Anthropic’s shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new wholly owned entity dedicated entirely to the public benefit. It will start off with 5% of our shares. For every 50% increase in the company’s value over a set baseline, we can contribute up to an extra 2%, subject to our board’s discretion. In total, this means that roughly 20% of Anthropic’s shares are committed to the public good. Our co-founders have already pledged to donate 80% of their equity, and around half our employees are donating a portion of their equity as part of a donation matching program we’ve run since our founding. In the post below, we share more details about our new fund.

SITUATION DETECTED: Anthropic has announced the new Anthropic Public Benefit Fund to explore large donations to traditional nonprofits or "direct distributions to specific populations", and stated that 20% of the company's shares will be dedicated to the public good.

The most significant line for me is "direct distributions to specific populations." It sounds to me like they are planning their own form of self-directed global UBI. About half of Anth employees are also donating shares into this fund. They foresee a transformative future.

.@AnthropicAI should start a UBI program that gives $3 to every American every month! $1b in profits a month gets it done! If folks don't claim their $3 it rolls over to the people who do the next month... I bet only 10% of Americans claim their AUBI —- so it will quickly become $20-30 a month! I'm not kidding… @DarioAmodei give Americans a $36 a year dividend and you'll be the most loved company in America 😂😂😂

What a massive W from Anthropic AI is the greatest technology in the history of our species. It will unlock abundance and freedom for everyone Unfortunately, foreign psyops have destroyed its image in America. Because of this, opportunist politicians are now running on being anti AI... and it's working You literally have AI unlocking the greatest era in gaming history, and gamers still hate it That's how much AI PR has been destroyed Unfortunately now if America is going to win, AI labs now need to focus on their image They need to start showing people they will be a net positive on society Anthropic is taking the first big step. They are giving 5% of their equity to the public I'm 100% certain nearly every other frontier lab will follow pursuit soon I still think way more needs to be…

Elon says that instead of putting shares into a Public Benefit Fund he will be giving shares directly to the public. Back in April, OpenAI also proposed a Public Wealth Fund that would distribute returns directly to US citizens through a dividend.

this post announced what could be the largest commitment of philanthropic capital ever made ($200 billion if Anthropic goes public at $1 trillion, which is probably conservative) the first reply I saw asked if Anthropic was going to use it for “gay race communism”

Elon Musk says he’ll give one SpaceX share to every kid in America in 2027, but he hasn’t said how the shares would be distributed or who counts as a kid. Axios estimates the giveaway could top $10.5 billion at SpaceX’s Friday closing price.
