Google's first space data center is the size of a refrigerator, holds four chips, and can only run for 15 minutes at a time before it has to shut down and cool off. It launches October 1 on a Falcon 9 out of Vandenberg. The satellite, built with Planet, carries four of Google's Trillium TPUs on about a kilowatt of solar power. Roughly the compute of one server. A normal Google data center runs thousands of these chips. The 15-minute limit is the physics everyone gets backwards. Space is minus 270 degrees, and the hardest engineering problem up there is getting rid of heat. On Earth you cool chips with fans and chilled water. In a vacuum there is no air to carry heat away, so the only exit is radiating it out as infrared, which is painfully slow. The same emptiness that surrounds the…Read original on X
Google is launching four TPUs into orbit for Project Suncatcher, and Jason and Lon break down what that means for the AI compute race. Bryant Chou of Ploy joins to explain why he sees the website as the key to understanding an entire business, and how his agents go about slurping them up.
